Competitions, which were judged by Mrs Whitehead, resulted as follows: Shopping kit: Mrs Raine 1, Mrs Eyre 2. This was a very popular competition and there was a very large entry. Bottle fruit: Mrs Eyre and Mrs Helwig were equal for first place, and Mrs Cristie and Mrs Raine equal for second. This also brought forward many entries. Flowers: Mrs Adams 1, Mrs Colville 2. Vegetables: Mrs Raine 1, Mrs Bruce 2. Mrs Wallace demonstrated fair isle knitting and Mrs Cran and Mrs Bruce were hostesses for the afternoon. PUAHUE BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Puahue branch of the Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday in the Puahue Hall. The president (Mrs Ferguson) presided over a fair attendance of members. Proceedings opened with the singing of “ God Defend New Zealand,” followed by the Institute Prayer, which was read by Mrs Fraser. A written competition was won by Mrs Galpin, and the roll call, “ Spoonerisms,” proved most amusing. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr W. G. Park for auditing the books of the branch. The points prize for the year was won bv Mrs Hastie, and competitions were won as follow: Best bloom cup, Mrs Richards; khaki handkerchiefs, best pair, machine and hand-made, Mrs Richards 1, Mrs Ferguson 2; apple shortcake, Mrs Hastie 1, Mrs Cavanagh 2. The sales table was under the care of Mesdames Hattaway and Hemmings, and the sostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Cooper, Glass, and Going.
