OBITUARY

MR WILLIAM RYAN By the death of Mr William Ryan, which occurred at the Hamilton Hospital last night, Te Awamutu loses a good citizen, who, during his long residence here identified himself with many sporting and other movements, being a particularly keen supporter of the Bowling Club, the Football Club and the Boxing Association. He was an ex-captain of the Te Awamutu Fire Brigade.

Born in Hamilton 61 years ago, where his parents, the late Mr and Mrs T. Ryan, were pioneers, deceased spent 14 years as a surfaceman and ganger in the Railway Department, afterwards coming to Te Awamutu, where for the past 21 years, he has been caretaker at the racecourse for the Waipa Racing Club, and in which capacity he rendered splendid service. It is worthy of note that the late Mr Ryan was one of the first to transport wheat from Hamilton to the flour mill at Te Awamutu, and the flour back to Hamilton. The round trip occupied two days with the horse-drawn waggons.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a family of four sons and two daughters. They are: Fred, William and Wally (overseas), and Pat, Jessie and Dorothy (Te Awamutu). A sad feature of his passing was his inability to hear the broadcast by Wally from the Middle East, on Sunday morning, and the news that William had gained commissioned rank.

The interment will take place at the Te Awamutu Cemetery to-morrow afternon.
