TE AWAMUTU BRANCH FOURTEENTH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED Te Awamutu Women’s Institute celebrated its fourteenth birthday on Friday last, Mrs Angus presiding. After the singing of “ God Defend New Zealand,” the members stood in silence to honour the memory of those fallen in battle. Owing to the war the Institute decided this year to eliminate party celebrations and confine invitations to sister organisations only. There were representatives present from the District Federation, Kihikihi and Puahue Women’s Institutes, Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, the Patriotic Society, and the Red Cross, and from each of these Mrs Angus received either a shoulder spray or a bouquet. After business matters had been dealt with there followed an enjoyable programme which comprised a play reading by the Drama Circle, items by the Glee members, violin solos by Mr Leslie Haynes, and dances by the Misses Dawn Russell and Nola Morriss. After a very dainty afternoon tea the president and committee members lighted the candles on a beautiful birthday cake, which had been made by Mrs O’Brien. Mrs Wlarren, of the District Federation, blew out the candles, and in cutting the cake made a neat little speech congratulating the Institute on attaining its fourteenth birthday. She reminded members of the three “ bones ” backbone for stability, funnybone for seeing the humorous side under adversity, and the wishbone for future good luck and prosperity. The afternoon closed with the singing of the National Anthem. The results of the competitions were: Shoulder spray, Mrs Warner 1, Mrs Ball 2; bowl of flowers, Mrs Ball 1, Mrs Manson 2; best bloom, Mrs Angus 1, Mrs Warner 2; hidden number, Mrs Bridge; wandering shilling, Mrs Garfitt. Competitions for October were arranged as follows: Miscellaneous competition, marmalade, best bloom.
