DOMINION STOCK
SHEEP, PIGS AND CATTLE FIGURES FOR 1941 Figures relating to live-stock in the Dominion are contained in the twentieth annual report of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board just issued. Totals are as at 30th April, 1941. Sheep: Lambs, 7,847,439; wethers, 2,390,130; breeding ewes, 20,030,933; dry ewes, 922,633; rams, 560,525; total 31,751,660; percentage of breeding ewes to the total flocks, 63.1. Sheep (including lambs) held in the Auckland land district totalled 2,628,023. Sheepowners: From one to 200, 7,800; 201/500; 7,735. 501/1000, 7,417; 1,000/2,500, 6,895; 2,501/5000, 1,853; 5,001/7,500, 430; 7,501/10,000, 150; 10,000/20.000, 132; 20,000/over, 21; total, 32,433. Throughout the Dominion during 1941-42, lambs tailed were 18,250,862 (estimate), and lambs killed for export were 11,125,000 (estimate), giving a percentage of export killings to tailings of 60-96. Estimated Auckland lambing returns: Number of breeding ewes, 2,715,473; estimated average percentage of lambing 93.00 (Otago-South-land) 94.62; estimated number of lambs, 2,525,556. Stocks of pigs (as at 31st January, 1941): 769,180. Stocks of cattle (as at 31st January, 1941): Breeding bulls, two years old and over, 78,662; cows and heifers, two years old and over, for dairying, 1,946,798; other cattle (including calves, 2,550,413; total, 4,575,873. Auckland district total, 1,196,264.
