TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
From the Waipa Post, July 22, 1917. Private advice has been received by Mr W. McCarthy, of Pirongia, that his brother, Private J. McCarthy, has been killed in action in France. Private McCarthy was attached to the 22nd reinforcement draft, and sailed from New Zealand last February. An inspection of the Te Awamutu Borough saleyards, with a view to preparing a scheme of works for the extension of the yards, and the concreting of the races and pens was made yesterday by Mr L. Austin in company with several members of the Borough Council. A loan of £3OOO was sanctioned and raised for this purpose a few months ago. At the annual meeting of the Te Awamutu Bowling Club the election of officers resulted:—Patron, Mr W. G. Park; President, Mr W. J. North; secretary, Mr H. P. Semmens; committee, Messrs A. S. Wallace, W. Jeffery, C. Richards, J. Jones, C. G. Downes; J. T. North and A. Wood; auditor, Mr A. J. Bray; selectors and handicappers, Messrs J. Jones and A. S. Wallace; green superintendent, Mr S. H. Dunkley. At a meeting of the directors of the Kakepuku Dairy Company on Saturday it was decided to pay a further interim bonus of Hd per lb. of butterfat delivered at the company’s factory last year. This will practically bring the advance payments up to 15id. A meeting for the purpose of forming a gun club at Te Awamutu took place at the Commercial Hotel on Saturday evening and was attended by 15 enthusiasts, over whom Mr F. Seccombe presided. It was unanimously decided to form a club to be styled the Waipa Rod and Gun Club. A veyy pleasant function took place at the Oddfellows’ Hall on Friday evening, when a large gathering assembled to bid farewell to Private E. Walters, who was on his final leave from camp. The following players will represent Te Awamutu in a football match to be played against Otorohanga at Bockett’s paddock on Saturday: W. G. Abbott, L. Kay, J. Richardson, Armstrong, Allan Kay, McDonald, Asher, Lang, A. Bond, W. Porter, C. Kirkham, E. Greensides, W. Middlebrook, Johnson, G. Richardson, A. Paul, Turnwald, Griffiths, Keenan and Jopson.
