GERMAN GAS WEAPON

WARNING FROM RUSSIA In their jubilation over Marshal Timoshenko’s victories on the Kharkov front and increasing tempo of the Nazi retreat to Smolensk, Soviet scientists did not forget Hitler’s recent references to “new weapons for the spring offensive.” To Britain’s Faraday Society and the British Chemical Society, the Mendeleyev All-Union Chemical Society of the U.S.S.R. sent this message:— “From documents found on war prisoners it is clear that Hitler and his gang are hatching a new crime. They intend to use all the means of modern chemistry in chemical warfare. The enemy is preparing gases and other chemical means to choke in poisonous fumes the peaceful population of the Soviet Union.” Soviet scientists’ appeal was: Put an end to all complacency about Soviet victories; strike heavy blows against the Nazis in the west before they unloose their poison clouds. And finally: Let the Democracies look to their gas-masks.
