MILITARY APPEALS

CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS A return showing the number of appeals on conscientious grounds against service with the armed forces overseas and with the Territorial Force up to last July has been tabled in the House of Representatives. Appeals for the Dominion totalled 2645. In the Hamilton and Paeroa districts 311 appeals were lodged, 184 being against overseas service and 127 against territorial service. The appeal boards determined 243 cases, and decisions were as follows: Dismissed outright, 61; dismissed subject to non-combatant service, 51; allowed, 26; adjourned on other grounds or pending further evidence, 41; adjourned because of medical unfitness, 22; struck out (permanently unfit), or dismissed for lack of prosecution, 32; withdrawn, 15.
