PETROL AND PEOPLE
Sir, —Yesterday in town I heard a man say that he must get going as he wanted to get back to Auckland, and he stepped into a car. I wondered what postmaster gave him petrol until I saw that it was a Government ear. Had I wanted an urgent trip to Auckland I would have been told that the trains are running. And then does anybody know what postmaster gives petrol to the Government man to use a biggish van for impressing vehicles. People who keep the trade of the country going are told to use a bicycle, so why the covered van? Then also, if the Power Board was a private business, would petrol be allowed for the meter reader to drive in comfort about the country ? Is the answer to all this that people whose business pays the taxes must walk while those whose business is socialised may ride? A. WALKER.
