SURPRISE PARTY
A PIRONGIA FUNCTION (Own Correspondent). A number of Pirongia friends of Miss Betty Owen took a surprise party to her home on Saturday evening, 31st January, the occasion being her 21st birthday. There were about 35 present and the evening was a jolly one, with games, competitions and musical items. The competitions were won by Mrs Hicky, Miss Findlay, Miss Head and Miss Mounsey. Piano items were rendered by Miss and Master Mulcahy, Miss Head and Miss Robinson. Mr J. Macky kept things going with his well-known humour and patter. After a very tasty supper, served by the ladies, the candles on the cake were lighted by Miss M. Macky (being the oldest school friend) and extinguished by Miss Owen. Her father then handed her the traditional key with the usual best wishes, and thanked those present on her behalf for the honour they had done her. After Mr J. Macky had spoken of the esteem in which Miss Owen was held, the toast was drunk with musical honours.
After a goodly array of presents had been opened, the evening came to a close with mutual good wishes. Those present included: Mesdames Rowan, Beet (senr.), McNaughten, Moeller, Ostberg, Hickey and G. Owen; Misses E. McNaughten, M. Macky, K. Head, E. Godfrey, M. Daley, M. Rowan, M. Barnett, P. Findlay, M. Robinson, U. Mounsey, K. Mulcahy, L. Smith, P. Owen, L. Owen, P. Hickey, and E. R. Owen; Messrs W. Head, J. Macky, G. Owen, C. Hickey, E. Moeller, E. Randall, Z. Owen, J. McNaughten, E. Miller, R. Robinson, S. Holdsworth and A. Rowan and Master Mulcahy.
