COUNTY OF WAIPA

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL VARIETY OF BUSINESS At the monthly meeting of the Waipa County Council on Monday, when, in the unavoidable absence of the chairman (Cr S. C. B. Macky), Cr J. T. Johnson presided, there were also present: Crs_ T. Church, E. F. Peacocke, J. W. Garland, R. J. Graham. D. .B. Livingstone, F. L. Onion, G. S. Hall, Hamilton Allen, G. S. Clarke, and N. Reid. KAIPAKI DRAINS The Engineer (Mr Graham Macky) reported that the position of drains in the areas of Jary and Mill Roads was in need of clarification. He recommended that the matter be discussed with representatives of the Rotomanuka Drainage Board. It was agreed that the Engineer and riding member act accordingly. SALE OF TIP DRAY The Engineer reported that the Hamilton Borough Council had purr chased one tip dray and an old cartsaddle for £25. « PARAWERA ROAD METALLING The Engineer stated that the collection of native rates reached such a stage (£3700 out of a grand total of £45,000) that it was deemed advisable to proceed with the work. The earthwork was in hand, and the metalling would be proceeded with as soon as the formation had settled down. Cr Allen considered that the amount collected was really very satisfactory, and he thought those natives who had become ratepayers were deserving of congratulation. Cr Livingstone considered that the remaining settlers should be forced to pay rates. On the motion of Cr Livingstone, seconded by Cr Hall, it was agreed that the rate collector be instructed to use all power to this end. GRADER DRIVERS’ CARS In accordance with a suggestion by the Engineer, it was decided to increase the yearly allowance for grader drivers providing their own cars from £l2 to £24. It was pointed out that when prices were normal, and petrol was available for private use, £l2 was a reasonable alloyrance, but now the cars were restricted to county use only. TE RAHU ROAD SEALING The Engineer stated that the materials for the sealing work on the Te Rahu Road leading to the Te Awamutu Cemetery were available, with the possible exception of tar for the first-coat sealing of the new length of 20 chains. The old length of 50 chains should be re-sealed if at all possible, otherwise it was liable to break up badly in the winter. It was only reasonable, he pointed out, to do the widening at the same time. In regard to the new length, the formation and metalling could at least be carried out and the sealing done if tar or its equivalent were available. It was decided, on the motion of Cr Hall, seconded bv Cr Onion, that the work be started subject to the Te Awamutu Borough Council finding its quota of the cost. THE E.P.S. In regard to the Council’s donation to E.P.S. funds, it was agreed that the amounts to be subscribed by the various ridings ehould be on a valuation basis. The secretary of the Cambridge E.P.S. organisation advised that at a meeting of the Cambridge E.P.S. Committee held recently the matter of finding the boundaries was discussed, and it was finally resolved that the district include the Pukekura Riding. Cr Garland explained that Roto-o-Rangi requested to be in the Cambridge area, and it was eventually decided to include the entire riding. The Council approved the alteration. WATER SUPPLY An application from nine ratepayers of the Racecourse Road area at Te Awamutu for the Council to give full , consideration to the question of supplying their properties with water from the Te Awamutu supply, was deferred till the next meeting. Meanwhile the Engineer and riding member will investigate the matter in order to report later. DOG COLLARS The acting-chairman recalled that at the last meeting a tender for supplying dog collars had been deferred. Since then the chairman and the clerk (Mr T. Grant) had discussed the matter, and concluded that it was advisable to accept this tender. If unlabelled collars were procured there would be no waste. On the motion of the acting-chair-man, seconded by Cr Peacocke, the suggestion was adopted. GENERAL Cr Onion raised the question of petrol allowances for attendance at local body meetings. He knew of cases where licenses for such purposes had been granted, and presumed that similar concessions would be made to other members of local bodies. The elerk was instructed to take the necessary steps to ascertain the position. Following a suggestion by Cr Clarke, it was agreed that a letter be written to the Te Awamutu Borough Council requesting that the matter of ragwort growing in the borough area be attended to.
