NOXIOUS WEEDS

INSPECTOR’S REPORT. At Monday’s monthly meeting of the Waipa County Council, the noxious weeds inspector (Mr G. M. Wall) reported as follows : “Work was resumed on 6th instant, and since then an endeavour has been made to clean up some of those areas on which it was not expedient to use either atlacide or sodium chlorate. “A letter is to hand from the Director of the Plant Research Bureau, regarding the samples sent to them last rfionth, and as will be seen from reading the letter, the ragwort was certainly dead, but this was due to the extraordinary climatic conditions, rather than the white insects that were observed eating the roots. “The question of obtaining salt supplies has been actively taken up by the Otorohanga County Council, and after consulting with the Chairman and several Councillors it was decided to join in a combined buying effort, our quota to be one hundred tons. “It has to be remembered in considering the question of using salt, that it is not claimed that it will kill ragwort, but it will check it for twelve months—whereas with the only other alternative, that is cutting, the task will have to be performed two or three times, which is out of the question, with the outlook for labour such as it is.”
