WINDOW SMASHING
APPARENT THEFT FRUSTRATED At about midnight on Tuesday the nightwatchman (Mr Arney) heard a sound of crashing glass in Arawata Street, and investigation revealed that a sheet of plate-glass in Mr Shepherd Smith’s shop frontage had been shattered. Sergeant S. G. Clist was at once advised, and in a few moments he was on the scene with Constable Gordon. The watchman had observed a man hurrying away as he came on the scene, and he was able to give the description necessary to aid in Iflentification. The man had disappeared into Mahoe Street. A search was at once instituted, and three people who were in Mahoe Street were interviewed, but at that hour the wanted man was not to be located.
The window had been shattered, but there was nothing to indicate what had been used to break it. The evidence suggests that robbery was intended, but the presence of the nightwatchman and the early attention of the Police frustrated that plan. The would-be thief obtained nothing for his trouble. Inquiry is being continued.
