POLISH FLIERS
HITTING AT THE ENEMY “Up to October 10 Polish fighter squadrons flying with the R.A.F. had definitely destroyed 375 enemy aircraft, probably destroyed a further 102, and damaged 48. Polish bomber squadrons had taken part in 252 raids, 1101 aircraft being engaged in the operations. These facts are given in the Polish Air Force magazine, ‘Skrzydla-Wiadomosci Ze Swiata.’ The ‘red-letter day’ for the bomber crews whs March 23 of this year, when they were instructed to bomb Berlin for the first time. ‘News of the proposed raid spread like wildfire among the crews and ground staffs,’ says the magazine. ‘The mechanics, always solicitous of their Wellingtons, made a scrupulous and painstaking final inspection of their machines. And when everything was ready and the aircraft took off, those left behind on the airfield bade farewell to the crews in exceeding earnestness. Can it be wondered at ? For the first time Polish bombs were to fall on the capital of a nation which had changed Warsaw and many other Polish towns and villages into chaotic destruction and charred ruins.”—London Times aeronautical correspondent.
