SOCIAL FUNCTIONS

A BRIDGE PARTY. FAREWELL TO POPULAR RESIDENTS. A bridge party, in the nature of a surprise and valedictory for Mr and Mis R. H. G. Connal, was held at the home of Mrs W. Jeffery, Alexandra Street, last evening, in view of the early departure of the guests to reside in Palmerston North. A very happy time was spent with music and bridge. Mirs J. A. Hawkins and Me F. L. Dunn were the winners of the bridge honours, and music was contributed by Mrs Hawkins, Mrs Judd, and Mr Ray Judd.

After supper Mr Jeffery was called upon by the company to express their regret at the departure from Te Awamutu of Mr and Mrs Connal and their son Bobbie, all of whom had many friends. Both Mi- and Mrs Connal had made lasting friendships during their two and a half years in Te Awamutu; they had played their part worthily in the business, church, and social life of the town, and would be much missed. Mr Jeffery wished them just as much happiness and success in their new sphere, and the wish was supported with musical honours.

Replying, M;r Connal said the parting was by no means a pleasant one, for both Mrs Connal and he had thoroughly enjoyed Te Awamutu and association with its residents. They had hoped to stay longer in Te Awamutu, but it was not to be, and he himself had gained very gratifying and valuable promotion in the bank’s service, so it was important to him and his that they transfer. However, memories of Te Awamutu and its people would be lasting and very pleasant indeed. He thanked them all for hospitality, consideration, and encouragement at all times. If, as Mr Jeffery had hinted, he had been of any service to the community, he was delighted, but he felt he was only doing his duty as a townsman for the advancement of the place, helping to make it the nice place to live in that all realised.

Among those invited were Mr and Mrs Connal, Mi’ and Mirs W. Jeffery, M’r and Mrs C- W, Rickit, Mr and Mrs F. L. Dunn, Mr and Mrs A. L. Storey, Mrs C. G. Downes, Mrs J. A. Hawkins, Mr and Mrs L. G. Armstrong, Mr and Mrs H. C. Rainey, Mr and Mrs R. C. Judd, Mr and Mrs A. A. Reese, Mr and Mrs A. J. McGovern, Mr and Mrs W- A. Betts, Mr and Mirs D. T. B. McArthur, Mr and Mrs H. Mandeno, Mr and Mrs A. Bond, Mr and Mrs R. Hutchinson, Mfr and Mfrs A. Wl. Pollard, Mr and Mrs J. F. Brooks, Mr and Mrs Jack Walton, Mr and Mrs C. A. Reilly, Mr and Mrs Lyell Kay, Mr and Mrs G. Hall (Hairini), and Mr and Mrs W. Ross (Hairini).
