SOCIAL AND PERSONAL

Mr Fred A. Waters, who has been on special military service at Trentham Camp, is home again for a day or two.

Mr W l . P. Tombs, manager of the Regent Theatre, returned on Wednesday evening from a business rtip to Wellington. During his stay in the Empire City Mi- Tombs paid a hurried visit to the Centennial Exhibition, which he describes as wonderful.

During his visit to Te Awamutu on Thursday evening to meet local returned soldiers, Brigadier-General Sir Herbert Hart, who is enjoying furlough from Palestine and visiting relatives at Te Kawa, was able to renew a very old friendship, for he met a former comrade-in-arms during the South African war of almost forty years ago. They had never met in the interim, but had occasionally corresponded. Very soon it was “ Bert ” and “ Fred,” like old times, and the reunion was a very happy one.

Word has been received that Fred "West, of Arohena, School, has won the boarding scholarship at New Plymputh Boys’ High School. The scholarship, which is for three years, entitles the holder to free board and lodging at the school. This is valued at £57 per annum. The lucky winner, who intends taking an Engineering Course, is the son of Mr FL H. West, locomotive-driver at the Arohena sawmill.
