“The proposed reconstruction of the New Plymouth-Te Kuiti main highway between the Mangaotaki bridge over the Paikaka Road offers such possibilities that the Aria route is further discounted,” says Mr J. Wood chairman of the Main Highways Board, in reply to an Automobile Association (Taranaki) suggestion for the elimination of the Mahoenui saddle by a deviation through the Totoro Valley. Assuming that reconstruction costs were £6OOO a mile, the capitalised cost of improving the present route would be £84,000 and of the Aria route £333,000, states Mr Wood, who adds: “These figures are too convincing to permit the Board having more than one opinion on the matter.”
