BOOTH LICENSES

UNIFORMITY NEEDED. POLICE RECOMMENDATIONS. The advisability of some uniformity in the matter of issuing conditional licenses was referred to at Wednesday’s annual meeting of the Waitpmo Licensing Committee, at Te' Awamutu. The inspector of police at Hamilton had suggested that the several Licensing Committees within th? Wgijfato district should issue conditional licenses only for such functions as race ipeetings, agricultural shows, etc., with stipulated uniform hours of opening and closing. He explained that 33 such licenses had been issued in the past year, and there was a wide variation in the hours. A suggestion advanced was that all should conform to 11 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.

The clerk mentioned that no special licenses had been issued by the Waitomo Committee in the past year. Mr If, A. Empson commented that the committee could at least express an opinion on the recommendation. fixe chairman, Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., remarked that perhaps the hours varied with the seasons of the year.. Actually the Waitomo Licensing Committee, which was not directly concerned, had plenty of other matter? to attend to. Presumably the hours of opening, in each case, were decided upon for the convenience of ths public than perhaps the convenience of the police officers on duty. Mr A. Blachman. Te Kuiti, said it seemed that the inspector of police was concerned, in his recommendatiou, with his officers getting back to their home stolons by race trains. Usually the booths at race meetings closed some little time after the last race had been run. Reference to the inspector’s letter showed that in all cases for which special licenses had been granted there were hotels located not far away. His officers were required to supervise the distribution of race traffic, particularly just after the final race, and at that time the booths Were still open. There was need to supervise the booths, too; hence his suggestion for some uniformity.

It was decided to receive the communication, so that the subject could be brought up again if desirable.
