Rumours that the Labour candidate for the Kaipara seat, Mr P. McG. Stewart, was retiring from the contest in favour of the Independent candidate, Mr J Scott Davidson, were denied by M<r Stewart when questioned on. the subject. “In all probability the rumours are the outcome of the fact that several meetings I had advertised to be held in the vicinity of Dargaville were cancelled,” said Mr Stewart. “It is not thei habit of the New Zealand Labour Party to withdraw a candidate once he has been nominated, and I have absolutely no intention of retiring.”
