HOCKEY

LAST SATURDAY’S MATCHES. WAIPA CHAMPIONSHIPS. Playing in the Waipa Hockey Association’s Empson Cup competition at Albert Park on Saturday afternoon, Paterangi and Te Awamutu B gave spectators several thrills, but each time an attack was developed there was some defender in position abl e to retrieve the position. No score was registered throughout the game. Te Awamutu A had a fairly comfortable win over Otorohanga A, although at times the home team was hard pressed. Te Awamutu registered four goals, R. Burns, B. Gibson, E. Penny, and J. Smith each scoring one. For Otorohanga Hawkins scored twice. FINCH ROSEBOWL. The contests in the ladies’ competitions were also keen, especially the Pirongia v. Paterangi match, which resulted in a win for the former by three goals to two. Scorers for the winners were Mrs Hawley (2) and Miss G. Bell, while for Paterangi Misss E. Spiers and R. Dixon each registered a goal. Hairini and Otorohanga elevens met, and an interesting contest ended in favour of the Hairini team, with three goals to nil. Mrs Welsh and the Misses N. Wilson and J. Cooper were the scorers.
