“One of the things I have noticed is the very generous use you make of machinery in New Zealand,” said Mr H. L. Freeman, a member of an American machinery - manufacturing firm, who is touring the Dominion. In an interview last week, Mr Freeman expressed surprise that the people were so mechanicallyiminded, since it was not always recognised, even m a country with a low population density, that progress could be achieved mere easily by the use of machines. “America is recognised to be tremendously mechanically-minded,” he added, “but I do not think America is any mere generous in her use of machines than New Zealand. It is only in miner directions perhaps that she is more advanced in her uses—to her employment of small patents for personal convenience.”
