TOLERANCE NEEDED
PLACE FOR SELF-RESTRAINT. “The extravagant and abusive outburst of anger by Herr Hitler because the Nobel award committee of the Norwegian Parliament gave the Peace prize for 1935 to. Carl von Ossietzky is not very creditable to Dev Fuehrer. But it is quite understandable. The Nobel committee has conferred a signal honour upon a man just released from imprisonment in Germany as a traitor. And it has bestowed this honour - because the recipient is a pacifist and opposed Nazi militarism:, the very two things that brought about his arrest and detention. So it is quite natural for Hitler to feel that the committee has given him a direct slap. But a feeling of decent pride should restrain him from fluttering - like a hit bird. Certainly the ire of the Nazi chief should not be visited upon von Ossietzky, an inoffensive semi-invalid who did not want the recognition given him and is in nd sense to blame for what has occurred. There at least some tolerance is in order. The judgment of the world in case tolerance is wanting will not he lenient.” “Detroit
