CARRIERS’ RATES
TRANSPORT IN RURAL DISTRICTS. CUT-THROAT COMPETITION TO BE STOPPED. “I am determined to put an end to cut-throat competition in the transport business in country districts,” said the Minister of Transport, Hon. R. Semple, in an interview. “I know of eases in which men are working 17 hours a day on the road for £2 2s a week. These men are a menace on the highways.” The Minister said he had advised the carriers and farmers and others concerned to get together and fix a price that would allow the carriers to live and pay their way. That was the only way to avoid forcing carriers into bankruptcy. The Government would prefer those concerned to fix the rates themselves. “I have recently been informed,” said Mr Semple, “that some of the carriers have objected, and want to retain the old cut-throat system. There is only one thing to do with these gentlemen, and that is to review their licences if they refuse to do the right thing in the interests of the service generally. “The Government has no desire to fix the rates. It would prefer this to be done by the parties concerned, but it is determined to act if there is no agreement,”
