DERATING RURAL LANDS
GOVERNMENT ACTION TO BE TAKEN. “I have good news for you to night,” said Mr H. O. Mellsop, Auckland provincial president of the Far mers’ Union, in addressing a rally ol the Bombay branch on Tuesday even ing. “You know that derating et farm lands has been a plank in the union’s platform for years. I have here a letter from the Prime Minis ter, the Rt. Hon M. J. Savage, which gives an assurance that rural derating will be brought about by tlie pre sent Government. The fact that the Government has not given effect to the policy does not mean that it is departing from it,” wrote Mr Savage. “Action will be taken in this matter later.” Mr Mellsop said that in view of the announcement this week of the Government’s intention to discontinue the 12 A per cent subsidy on rates payable by urban farm lands, the assurance that action would be taken in the matter of derating rural lands wan timely.
