HEALTH CAMPS
DOMINION-WIDE STAMP CAMPAIGN. MAYOR’S MEETING ATTRACTS LITTLE INTEREST. Little apparent interest was shown in the meeting convened oy his wo.ship the Mayor lor Monday evening, to consider steps to be taken to raise funds tor assisting the Health btamp campaign. , . , . Mr bpinley said he had issued invitations to many local and public bodies to be interested. The response was by no means promising, comprising only Miss Eyre (representing the Women’s Division), and Messrs E. N. Pascoe (postmaster), A. Brown, G. Gifford and the Town Clerk (Mr D. Bockett), who acted as secretary. The Plunket Society wrote pointing out that that organisation was debarred by instructions from its parent executive from taking part .n any effort for other than Plumcet advancchrient. However, practically every member of the Te Awamutu Plunket Society was identified with one or other local institutions that would be co-operating, and therefore would be contributing in some way. Mr Pascoe explained that last year there was little or no organisation, largely because of the Queen Carnival in progress at the time. Then he had deputed one of his officers to interview the shopkeepers, and as a result many health stamps were sold in small lots. Sales over the post office counter added to the fund. To a question, Mr Pascoe said stamps would be issued in only one denomination —costing twopence —one penny for ordinary postage and one penny for Health Camps. He added that at a R.S..A function about £lO worth had been sold in small lots. Mir Gifford remarked that there ware so many calls on the generosity of local retailers that some could hardly be blamed for evading some appeals. By their absence from the meeting it seemed that others took the same view. The opinion was expressed that the meeting was not representative, enough to justify creating an active campaign. Mr Gifford, as the only licensed stamp vendor locally, suggested that he could take a quantity of health (tamps for retailing. It was suggested that a street collection might be promoted for a Thursday in Te Awamutu. It was mentioned that quite a number of children from Tei Awamutu and neighbourhood had enjoyed the facilities of health camps, for two or three weeks, notably at Waikato Heads, through the organisation of the Sunshine League, Hamilton.
