ELSTOW NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent). EUCHRE TOURNAMENT The first of the season’s euchre tournaments and dances held by the Hall Society was brought off successfully on Friday evening last. Owing to many counter attractions there was not a large attendance, but the 35 couples present had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. The floor was in quite good order and is improving with every- function, and excellent music (piano and violin) was dispensed by Mr and Mrs Darby. Whilst dancing enthusiasts were being well catered for euchre was kept going until about 11 p.m., and judging by the hilarious laughter heard occasionally was much enjoyed. The play off for the men’s first prize was particularly exciting and interesting. The first prize for the laides went to Mrs A. Hazelton, whilst Mr J. Scott secured that for gents. The booby prizes went to Mrs H. Stembridge and Mr Bottomley respectively. The evening was brought to a close at about 12.30 p.m. The Society intend running these functions fortnightly, and the next one will take place on Friday, the 15th inst. SCHOOL PRIZES Oming to the lateness of the season the School Committee decided to abandon the usual picnic and in place of it have a gathering in the Hall on Saturday, May 2nd, to give out the school prizes. The children had a most enjoyable afternoon. Musical items were kindly given by Mr and Mrs Darby, and a song by Miss F. Strange and many items by the children themselves. The prizes were given out — a suitable book for each child, even the very tiny tots not yet of school age—and very soon many small heads were buried in stories. Afternoon tea dispensed by ladies, and after sweets had been handed round all returned to their homes quite happy.
