At the meeting of the Power Board on Tuesday, on the motion of Mr Price, a resilution was pessed '.expressing sympathy with Mr Coombes, who had met with an accident while working on one of the electric lines.
Reference was made by the vicar at the annqal meeting of the parishioners of St. Mark’s Church on Tuesday evening to the passing away of some of the old settlers. Among those was the late Mrs Cann, who had been called away home quite recently. The late Mrs Cann had been a church worker in New Zealand for over 60 years, and for some years she had been a member of St. Mark’s Church, doing very valuable work. On the the motion of the vicar a motion of sympathy with Mr and Mrs Cornish and Miss Cann was carried, while all stood for a few moments.
Mr A. F. Burton, who has been secretary of the vestry for St. Mark’s Church, Te Aroha, intimated last evening that he could not accept re-ap-pointment this year. Both Mr Bruce and the vicar spoke of Mr Burton’s devotion to his duties, which had always been carried out cheerfully. The vicar made particular reference to Mr Burton’s services to the church as a lay reader, and mentioned the fact that he had regularly visited Manawaru on alternate Sundays at much sacrifice to himself so that he might conduct the services which the vicar was unable to take. On the motion of Mr Bruce, seconded by Mr Strange, a hearty vote of thanks* was carried by acclamation to Mr Burton for his past services. In returning thanks Mr Burton said he hoped some time in the future to be able to help them in some small way.
