McCABE’S ROAD

PROPOSED LOAN EXPENDITURE A deputation watied on the Piako County Council on Monday with regard to the loan for McCabe’s road. It was stated by Mr Mikklesen that the ratepayers could not bear the whole of the cost of , the road works concerned, and further that the ratepayers had not sanctioned the whole amount which it was proposed to raise. The engineer said he had made Or mistake of £2OO. He had entered lip £770 instead of £570. Mr Mikklesen said they considered that the Council should do something for them and there was not a hope of carrying a poll. He pointed out that some of the ratepayers who were in the Concrete road rating area woulcP also pay under the present proposals. He thought the Council should provide something out'of the Waihou general account and should obtain a good subsidy besides.

Cr. Kennedy said that at the request of the settlers it had been decided to metal two roads, including McCabe’s road, and they were practically unanimous in favour of a loan. It had <' later been put forward by the engineer that it would have been a better proposition if Racecourse road was included. The inclusion of this road would increase the amount required but it was not going ,to increase the individual burden of the ratepayers. He believed that a good subsidy could be obtained from the Government. The deputation really wanted the Council to do something for them because they realised that the burden ’ was too heavy to bear alone. / The engineer said it would pay the Racecourse road peoplg to go in for a loan on their own. The chairman said that if the work was to be done by next winter they would get no subsidy, but help could be given if the work was delayed till next year. The road in which the de putation was interested was sure of . subsidy, but there would be no funds from Cr. Kennedy’s riding till after March 31st next year. Cr. Kennedy said he could only re-; member one case in which a grant had been made to assist in the road work in a special area. Mr Mikklesen said that if the Gotih* cil was confident that it could get good subsidy there would be no need to sanction the full amount. The chairman urged that the full amount should be sanctioned. Cr. Kennedy said the poll had been . sanctioned and the following day was the last day for lodging objections. Suppose they could not get a subsidy could they let the matter drop The chairman: They could if, were unanimous. If the loan was car, V*’*' ried nothing would be done by the n , Council till they had a subsidy. .If ; they did not carry the loan there _ there could be no subsidy. The clerk said that'owing to a mistake made in the estimate it would be necessary to go through the forms preliminary to a poll again. It was urged by one member of the, deputation that properties rated the Concrete road should be removed . from the concrete area if they were to be included in McCabe’s 1 road area. After the chairman had pointed out •, that certain adjustments could be’ made by the Magistrate with regard, to what areas should be brought jg; the deputation withdrew.
