DANCE CARNIVAL
BY THE PUPILS OF MISS CLARE SMALES *
At the Theatre Royal on Friday evening last before an appreciative audience of parents and friends the pupils of Miss Claire Smales gave a very pleasing exhibition of the terpischorean art. The stage was very effectively decorated and the pretty costumes and general joyous abandon of the children performing was very refreshing. ;< The proceedings opened with a taking wood nymph ballet and finished with the song “Lullaby Land” (M. Dalton and M. Nash) with all the children joining in the chorus and afterwards singing the National Anthem, thus making a fitting final tableaux to the evening’s entertainment. A diversity of items, particulars of which are given below, was presented the most striking of which were the items “Oh, What a Difference the Baby’s Made to Me” and “Oh, Lady,” by Nora Cahill, who showed an almost uncanny aptitude for making the points of the songs with voice, gesture and facial expression. Bobby Hunger appeared in several items and won much applause by her easy naturalness. _ Margaret Dalton gave a good exhibition of toe work, and Mitey Nash’s work in fV| e Eastern ballet Was rather strikingly good. Peggy Ray looked very pretty in her Greek dance and “Humoreske,”\ and B. and J. Billings were very effective in their Butterfly and Rose duo. The pianistes for the dancing were Mrs Cahill and Miss K. Hedge.
Mr F. A. Jennings accompanied his singing pupils, Miss Freda Strange and Mr John Young. Miss Strange, whose stage deportment is excellent, sang with artistic ease and finish Nairn’s “O That we two were Maying,” “Loch Lomond,” “Three Fishers,” and the always welcome “Sally Horner.” Mr John Young, who was in particularly good voice, delighted the audience with the “Ringers,” “Yeoman’s Wedding,” “Ballad Monger,” and “The Druder Courtship.” Miss Smales is to be congratulated on the artistic success of her very bright and well aranged entertainment.
