WAIKINO TRAGEDY

DATE OF PROCEEDINGS

CASE TO BE HEARD AT PAEtiOA

The district coroner (Mr W. M. Wallnutt) had a conference with Police Inspector Wohlmann at Waihi last Saturday as to the date to be fixed for the coroner’s enquiry touching the deaths of the two schoolboys killed during the Waikino shooting tragedy on October 19, and the charge against John C. Higgins. As a result it was decided that the inquest be opened at Waihi on Monday, December 3, subject to the date suiting the Crown Prosecutor at Auckland (Mr Meredith), and that the murder charge be heard at Paeroa on the following Monday, December 10.

The selection of Paeroa for the hearing of the murder charge was because the train services would be more convenient to witnesses than Waihi.
