Up to v the present, it would appear, it has been impossible to |iold the Turks, because there's no one to hold them. That is the definition made by facts of the now situation in the Near Eait. ,The feelings of the Allied statesmen may be imagined. They have brought thirigs“ to this pass by their follies and failures ; massacres actual and impending in Asia Minor and Thrace ; the Turks demanding Constantinople and the v Straits, the Moslem sentiment all over the world ablaze to get the Turk whatever he wants; the Allies them* selves in agreement only about a fringe called tbe Dardanelles ! Who would have thought it a few years ago, when Allenby 'was scouring round Syria capturing the Turkish armies, doing easily in a few weeks what tho Old Crusaders had failed to do after centuries of effort ? Who would have thought it when General Maude captured the oaptMl of Haroun-al-Raschid expelling the Turkish devastators of ooe of the fiuest regions of history ? It is * the usual question of the fool who hag ; done wrong with his eyeß open. If the lips of these responsible pibpie are too dry to let them frame the question we oannot be surprised.
