The Rev. J. Dukes has left for Wellington to attend the sessions of the annual Conference.
A Government inspection parade of the Te Aroha Rifle Club took place in the Pound paddock last evening.
Mr and Mrs W. Hill, of Rotorua, are at present on a visit to T« Aroha, looking up old friends—of which they have many.
A meeting of the Waihou Branch of the New Zealand Fanners’ Union will be held in the Waihou Public Hall tomorrow (Wednesday) eveninng at 8 o’clock.
The Railway Department announce that holiday excursion tickets will be issued in connection with the Pukekohe Show, on 26th and 27th February, available for return to 6th March. We understand that a cricket match is being arranged between Waihou and a representative team from the goldfields.
Some very wild tendering was indulged in between tenderers for various contracts throughout the Piako County at yesterday’s meeting. In one contract the tenders ranged from £l9 to £ll9. In reply to a Councillor yesterday the Piako County clerk (Mr R. S. Hanna) stated that the rates were coming in fairly well close on £BOO being received last month.
Telephonic communication with Auckland through Morrinsville and Hamilton is now complete. The charge is Is 6d for eaeh three minutes.
A lecture to men only will be delivered in the Public Hall, on Wednesday evening, by the Rev. W. Blair. Boys under the age of fifteen years will not be admitted As the subject to be dealt with is one of vital importance, it is hoped that the attendance will be large. The lecture begins at 8 p.m. Young men especially are invited. We would like to remind ’cyclists that the footpaths within the Borough are not for their sole use. Perhaps it would be as well, in order to impress this upon them more forcibiy, if one or two were brought before the Court and fined. By an inset m this issue it will be seen that Mr Samuel Barry, D.8.0.A., the eyesight specialist, of Auckland, is paying another visit to Te Aroha. Messrs Flynn Bros’, who are well and favourably known throughout this district, intimate by advertisement elsewhere that they have purchased an up-to-date chaffing plant, comprising a double-bagging machine, gas engine, etc. They will be ready to start work the first week in March. Farmers entrusting work with this firm can rest assurred it will be well and faithfully carried out.
For the benefit of those desirous of increasing their weight we might mention a sure, road to accomplish this end—according to a gentlemen who has re. ently taken up his residence amongst us. Some time ago he got very much run down and lost considerable weight, in fact he became unpleasantly thin. He took half-a-pint of new milk, straight from the cow, night and morning. His weight increased until the two stone lost was more than made up. He then ceased taking the milk. A few weeks ago. as he was losing flesh, he again tried the milk cure, with the same beneficial results.
. In New York milk is being shipped 300 to 400 miles in New York city. TL* milk is handled in 40-quart cans, well packed with ice, and shipped by express iu milk cars •»r special trains.
• Those who know wbat a “ smother ’ is among sheep will realise how a Taihape Maori sheep farmer named Pukutohe lost no less than 400 prime two and four-tooth ewes one night recently. It uppears that the usual curse in a Maori kainga, the übiquitous Maori dog, got to work at a flock of 500 ewes at 1 night and smothered 400 in a small swampy gully. The sheep were valuod at 17s each.
As our readers are no doubt aware, a movement is on foot to make a presentation to Mr W. F. Massey, Leader of the Opposition, iu recognition of his services to the dominion. A strong committee has been formed in Auckland for the purposo of furthering the scheme, the chairman being Mr F. Lang, M.P., and the secretary Mr G. J. Garland. The “Kilties Band” will give two performances in Te Aroha .on Thursday next, in the Hall and at the Recreation Ground. All should endeavour to bear this World-famous Band.
