On the arrival of the Mariposa at San Francisco on her lastjj trip, seven of the firemen were given in custody for diaobedience to orders, and the case occupied the attention of the San Francisco Courts. Troubles also ensued with the Sailors' Union, who called out the seamen. In consequence the owners shipped a full crew of Chinamen. By the discovery of dynamite, rifle cartridges, and other explosives placed under various buildings in Chicago, the belief is gaining ground that the Anarchists and Socialists had a scheme to burn and loot that city on May 4. That they did not go beyond rioting at that time, was due to the prompt action of the police. Preparations were being made in San Francisco to receive some 15,000 visiting members of the Grand Army of the Republic. The general encampment will be held there in August. Dr. J. Milton Bowen, a practising physician in San Francisco, was sentenced to be hanged, on June 2, for the murder of hi? wife. Several of the rioting anai'chists in Chicago were poisoned to death by mistaking carbolic acid for whiskey. The parade of the federated trades in S-nn Francisco on Tuesday evening, May ! 11th, was a great success There were j about S,000 wagu-workers in line. The Governor of the State declared the day a legal holiday, and with his staff rode at the head of the procession. A cyclone swept over Kansas City and Leavenworth ou May 11th, nearly demolishing both places. A great many persons were killed and wounded. Alderman Jashne, of New York, convicted of bribery in connection with the Broadway Kailroad franchise, was on May 20th sentenced to nine years and ten months' imprisonment in Sing Sing. The polygamous convicts in Utah, to whom offers of leniency were made by the authorities if they would promise obedience to the law, spurned the overtures indignantly. In their reply they said : •' Our wives would deem such action cruel, inhuman, and monstrous, our children would blush for shame, and we Rhould deserve the scorn and contempt of all honourable men." A Spanish revenue cutter was captured on May 25 and taken into Gibraltar, for firing upon and seizing three trading boats in English waters. An artillery fire" from the rock was opened on her. San Francisco was shaken by a slight earthquake on May 26th.
