Country near Rotorua Covered with Blue Mud.

Rotorua, 12.15 p.m. Mr Dansey, Kotorua, further reports that telegraph communication is interrupted north of that station, and that for about six miles to the north of Te Awamutu (?) the whole of the surrounding country is covered with blue mud three feet deep. At Wairoa it is ten feet deep, and the houses all buried up to the eaves. Several parties of women and children left for Tauronga in the middle of the night by the bush road. Fearful news of loss of life has reached here from Wairoa.

Rotorua, 12.20 p.m. Mr Dansey reports that prospects seem brighter. The office is all safe as yet. Several coaches and buggies are in readiness for instant departure if necessary.
