[FROItf AUCKLAND "STAB," NOV. 7, 9, & 10.] AN Annual Agricultural Show Is, or at least ought to be, the pulse whereby one might roughly diagnose the condition of the farming, pastoral, and manufacturing industries com prised within the bounds of its particular dis trict. It should serve as a fair indox to the pro^ gress made in breeding, the improvement of our studs, herds, and flocks, and tho growth and extension of local manufactures. If the Show which is yearly held at Greenlane, under the auspices of tho Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association, has not yet attained to this standard, it is rapidly approximating to it. Although he numbers of entr.es during the years of tho past decade may not evince that steady progression in wealth, indus'ry, and population which has taken place throughout the province of Auckland, the fact is attributable to merely adventitious causes. For instance, last year the amount of prize money was less by £500 than that offered in the previous year.and there Avas a consequent diminution of the number of exhibits. Then, again, dogfanciers and poultry and canary-breeder 3 have of late yearsheldspecialshowsand thereby lessened the inducement to exhibit at the larger and more general Show. These and similar causes will satisfactorily account for any fluctuations manifested in the statistics of the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association, whose Show for ISBS was opened this morning at Greenlane. What, however, renders such institutions of special value in any community is the spirit of emulation which they engender and stimulate. Breeders are put on their mettle, and strive to procure pedigree stock boasting the most fashionable strains of blood. As a result of this, the settlers are afforded facilities for improving their flock 3 and herds, and bv this infiltration of better blood the quality of all sorts of stock rises rapidly. Again, the Show brings town and country into direct rapport, and without the intervention of the übiquitous middleman, the country folk may see what their urban cousins can supply them with, while the latter are enabled to perceive where best to procure either stock or produce. It is a good substitute for the periodical fairs with wh'ch those of us who hail from the Old Country are f amiiiar. The Show subserves all the best purposes of the Fair, avoids its drawbacks, and achieves good results altogether foreign to the scope of the Fair. For these and other reasons it has a strong claim upon public support and patronage. The present Snow is considerably better than that of last year. Towards this end the augmentation of the amount of prize money bysomo £3uO odd has greatly conduced. It has, doubtlass, led to the decided increase in the aggregate number of exhibits— an increase to which horses, cattle sheep, and local manufactnrps and produce all contribute. On the other hand, the poultry and pigeons and the do^s have decreased as to number of exhibits, but we have already indicated the probable reason for this fact. It may too partly account for the decline of rniscelfaueous exhibits. In order that the extent and nature of these variations may be perceived at a glance, we have compiled and hereto append a comparative table of the numbers of entries received for the Shows of 1879, 1880, 1881, I£B2, 1883, 1881, and for the current Show :—

This is the number of articles exhibited. It may be that the establishment of the New Zealand Frozen Meat Company h -s had something to do with increasing the display of cattle; but if &o, it is difficult to understand why the entries of sheep have not advanced in like proportion. As pointed reference has been made by us to the effect upon the Show of the greatly reduced amount of p'ize money offered last year, we have prepared a tabulated statement showing how much more liberally exhibitors are dealt with on the present occasion. Here it U:—

* There are also two prizes of unspecified amounts for the two largest prize-takers, besides a silver cup for the best pen of 10 sheep. t A silver cup is also offered for the best Brahma. t Decrease. In this connection it may be just as well to explain that a very fair proportion of the prize money was either specially donated or subscribed for particular purposes in the various classes. . „ . , , , , The morn h? !<roke rather dubiously, but towards 9 o'clock the promise of a fine day became more and more assured. Almost from the dawn the Show grounds presented a scene of activity. Stock of all kinds was arriving and being penned, while the exhibitors of local manufactures had

their employees at work in good time arranging, classifying, and titivating up their various exhibits. The * n spectivo departments of the Show occupy the same posifcto' s as they did last year, and now, as then, several rof eshment marquees are in situ, while " llhoda, tho Herodian Wonder," is on tho ground to astonish tho bucolics. Mr McEwon is busy with preparations for tho gustronomical entertainment of the inner man, and Mr Pcicival U mai-shal-liug thejudges and stewards for their separate duties. As the admission fee has been reduced from 5s to Is, a very considerable assemblage of the public is expected in the afternoon, but so far t>o at'endance is limited to peoplo directly interested. We append a few particularised remarks anent the exhibits in each distinctive class, together with a list of tho awards which had boon declared up till the timeol' our going to press :—

HORSES. The display of horses is numerically better than that of last year and a long way superior as to quality. In f.iot. the average standard of quality is very sensibly highor. The draught stock, however, exhibits this improvement in largest measure, and it is very noticeable in the show of hacks. Amongst tho thoroughbreds, one misses with keen regrot tho familiar form of Musket, with his faultless symmetry and racing associatio s. Leolinus, Hippocampus, and Billingsgate are old favourites, but Tho Dauphin is a novelty and will well repay attention. Mr James Williamson has scturcd in him a magnificent scion of the old Traducor stock. Unfortunately tho animal doos not appear to his best advantage, as he is buffering from an injury to ono of his legs. The influence of the Stud Company in disseminating tho blood of pedigroo stock through the btables of the province is very manifest, and the exhibition of horsos would do credit to any Agricultural o*lioay in tho world. As u->ual, the Waikato Land Association and thp New Zealand Stud Company are contributing largely to the success of iho exhibition by the excellent character and large number of t'-cir exhibits. The well-known bull Duke of Newcastle appears in first-class condition, and is shown by Mr \V. Taylor. Baron Kaly, exhibited by the New Zealand Stud Company, is also a line animal. SWINE. The entries have increased from 9 last year to 15 this year, and there is also a coincident advance in point of quality. Two splendid litters are shown by Messrs Wills and Percival respectively. Mr Percival's is, perhaps, the best sow, although not in her best condition, but Mr Will's young pigs would be hard to match. They are remarkably well-grown for their age, viz., 5 weeks and 1 days. Messrs Bainbriuge and Percival exhibit two fine little boars under 12 months old, and it is a pity they are not catalogued together in the same class. There are some capital young sows, and Mr Wills has on view a rather unusually big pig for its age of 7 months and 6 days. PIGS (Berkshire Breed).
