MEETING RE CHEESE FACTORY AT. WAIHOU.
, ♦- — »—» — jut tbe conclusion of Backland's sale on Wednesday, 21st last,, a meeting was held -.at Moffatt's Hotel, Waitoa, re above; Present : Messsrs J. B. Smith (chautman), T. Howe (sec.), S. Seddon, j — McNichol, •— Turnbull, R. Parr, and others. Minutes of previous - meeting were read and confirmed. With reterence to the pnrchase of a Very suitable site from Government ad joining the Waihou railvray station ground) the committee appointed to try and stnrfc a factory had communicated With Air J. B. Whyte, M.H.R., who interviewed the Minister for Lunds on behalf of the proposed ••ompany. The following reply from Mr Whyte was read :—: — " Wellington, July 22ud, 1885, "Ma Thos Rowe. ". Dear JSir, — The Minister for Lands says that he is agreeable that the piece of land you wish for the factory should be offered for sale at a very low upset price, trusting to the forbearance of other* not to bid agninst the Cueese Company, it will, there lore, be iitcessary for yon to apply to the Waste Lands Board \o have the laud put up to auction at sny 5s por acre or even 10-% and refer them to what I have informed yon of the Minister's wishes in the matter. You may also mrntion that it is tlfe intention of the Government to remove the reservation of this land for railway grants in aid, as private rail\v&\9 are contrary to their declared policy. Hoping that this may have the effect you desire. — I remain, yours sincerely. f "J. B. WhyTb." ■' The land referred to has been, surveyed by order of the Committee, and Was found to contain about 25 acres. | %he capital' 'of the proposed Company Was to be £2500 in &\ shares. ■ Considerable discussion took place as to the advisability of putting forth fresh effoits to try and start a factory at an early date, or waiting for a little ti»ne, and resulted in the following resolutions bejug proposed :—«- . 1. Proposed by Mr Parr, That the Secretary be instructed to write the Minister of Lands requesting that the land for a factory site be granted free of charge ; at same time pointing out that the establishment of a cheese factory as proposed, was most desirable, and would largely enhance the value of the Government land adjoining." Seconded by Mr J. B. Smith, and carried nem con. 2. Resolved, That no further action be taken with respect to the establishment of a factory, till a reply be received from Government. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chair.
