Atf.event which is exciting considerable interest is to be decided here on Saturday noxt. I refor to a race between Mr Jas. Howes 5- year old mare by Musket, and Mr Harry Bartletts aged maiv Thurntopper, weight for age ; distance twice round the Morrinsville racecourse, saya out 2 miles. 'Hie race will start at half- past five, so late an hour being fixed, to enable the many han.ls employed on both railway contracts now in progress in this vicinity t"> be present. Both the animals aie in excellent train* ing, and the event it, likely to be very closely contested. I hiay remark that an impromptu race came off between ihe same horses for £o a si le about six weeks ago, over the «atn« ground as now selected, on which occasion Thorn topper came in the winner, solely many say on account of the Musket nmre running wildly, being her first race ; both "horses •"oh ? that "occasion being taken off the grass. The stakes on Saturday will be £15 a- side. On Monday last shearing was commenced on Messrs Morrin and Studholme's estate ; the Lincolns only are , being shorn now, the merinos will not be shorn till a iittle later on In the season. Extensive, drainage works are now being carried out on this estate, anil Mr Jas. Wiseman has accepted for some large contracts in connection therewith, and has some twenty men at work, and additional hands are about to be put on. What is known as Hungawhera swamp is where ,the drainage works are in progress at present. I understand it is the hitentif n/of the owners to have a large amount ojf* draining proceeded with thin summer. The swamp referred to when relieved of its surplus water, is soil of rexcejle.nt quality, Mr Jenkins (Motnra-joho), has also a' number of hands employed in drainage * works, on swamp land ; this gentleman is busy shearing just now.
