SHAFT ESBURY. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
Mr Grant it is said has made arrangements to take down a number of the cottages belonging to and erected by him some eighteen months ago atShaftesbury, and is going to have them removed and re-erected at Waiorongomai on sections purchased at the late Kale of Mr. S. C. Macky's land (section 13 Thames High School Endownment). This step if carried out will seriously injure the advancement of Shaftesbury and district. Although Mr Grant has just oblained the Government title to his block, and may be acting within the bounds of the law still such an action as tins' could not be too strongly condemmed, and it surely was never the intention of the Government when they offered such liberal terms to Messrs Grant and Foster to bring out a certain number of settlers and start the township, that having obtained a clear title to the land in question they should then be the first to take steps that must of necessity prove most injurious to the further progress of the district. We hear that the Government authorities have been communicated with on the subject, and it is to be hoped they will give the matter the attention it deserves. A man named Mackintosh lately in charge of Carrs house, took his departure for fresh fields and pastures new, during the small hours at a recent date without even bidding " Good-bye " to a number of storekeepers, who consider they were entitled to this act of conitesy ; and who would be glad of any information as to the gentlemens present place of abode. The arrangements here for crowing the i river are at present most unsatisfactory, it is to be hoped that a properly erected and managed punt will be constructed j with as little delay as possible. j Now that summer is coming in, the settlers are anxiously looking out for the arrival of Mr llocho's new boat, which it is expected will be trading within a fortnight. Since his former boat was accidently burned some few months since, much inconvenience has been felt from want of some .such conveyance. \ site, given by Mr E. Y. Cox for a school, has been substantially fenced (post and rail) by the authorities of the School Board. j
