OUR MINES.
There is no change to report in the different mines. The manager reports they are still breaking down goorl stone. Vulcan. — The manager has employed his men breaking quartz, in which gold is freely visible. As the lode is a large one, fully four feet, a parcel of 100 tons will soon be ready for forwarding to the battery, and the returns are expected to bo highly satisfactory. Smile or Fortune.— This ground lies between the Premier and Vnlcan companies mines, nnd contains about 200 feet of the Premier reef, which carries rich gold in the Premier and Vulcan ground. The boundary runs within 50 feec of the Premier gold, which apparently dips very f ust in to the Smile of Fortune, and will be probably found there at the next level. Two other lodes also outcrop in " Smile," in one of which some very rich stono is being found. A strong company is being formed to work the ground and put in a [evel to get the dip of the Premiar gold. Wellington. — Energetic prospecting is being carried on under Mr Hornibrook, and we have seen some quartz broken i from a nice-looking reef which shows I strong blotches of coarse gold. Welcome. — The winze is now connected with the level, and next week the manager will commence stoping and take out some quartz for crushing as soon as he can get the use of five head of stampers. Army G.M. Co. — The manager, Mr William Goldsworthy, Ims had the men engaged in the Te Aroha portion of the Company's property stripping a reef about 4 feet for a distance of 50 feot, and prospecting the surface by blasting out and breaking down the cap of the reef, from which good prospects can be obtained on
I pounding 1 the stone. A crosscut is being driven to cut the reef about 150 feet north of where the reef is being stripped ; the manager expects to intersect the reef in a few feet of driving. It is the intention of this company to send a few tons to the battery for the purpose of testing the value of the quartz at no distant date. All Nations G-.M. Co.— The drive is being pushed on, the ground is hard and tough ; the last few days has brought a change, and the men are now opening out on a likely-looking leader, which promises well for the future of the mine. ■ Waiorongomai Gr. M. Co. — The manaager continues driving on the reef. At everything down gold can bo seen in the stone, the last breaking down braught to hand some of the best stone yet obtained from this mine, gold being seen freely in the stone. This mine has a large quantity of good crushing dirt now on hand.
