AN OPTIMISTIC SOLDIER. Some idea of the optimism of the men at the iront id obtainable from the following passage in ti letter written to an Auckland resiuent by his grandson, who enlisted in the original Australian Expeditionary Force, and is stili on service: "I suppose you are all a wee bit downhearted about the news lately, but you must not let that worry you. We are going to have a big win one of these days. As you know, England has never won a quick war, and it is always the chap with a good punch in the last round that wins, and this is a fight to a finish, so I think we can last the full twenty rounds. Haig has got old Fritz fighting for dear life just at present, and I should like to know what move the Allies are going to make next. Somebody will get a shock in the very near future. Of course Russia has upset things a bit, but we shall manage just the same. Had Russia stayed true I haven't the slightest doubt that the war would have been over this year but more reverses, more honour for the Allies when the last blow is struck. We are going to win this old war all right, and I think old Fritz knows all about it, because he is goinohis hardest just at present. We shall have the Americans with us soon, antJ I think Germany is trying f 0 make the Allies break down before the Americans come into the war. Everybody is cheery and in the best of spirits, and all looking forward to something big in the .near future."
