NEWSPAPERS EXPRESS .REGRET.

LONDON, February 17,

It is recalled that Sir Wm Robertson took up the position of Chief of the Staff conditionally that he had powers to communicate direct with Cabinet, also the commanders in the field without references to the War Secretary. Newspapers agree that his withdrawal will embarrass the Government, hut will not affect the course of the war or the War Council ’s plans. They unanimously regret the step, hut urge that the ranks be closed up in view of the gravity of the situation.
