AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

WEEKLY EVENING MEETING. It was originally arranged that the Garrison Sports Committee should manage the amateur athletic meeting set down for Lancaster Park last evening; but when that committee failed to ! come forward the Canterbury A.A. I Club, as one of the strongest in the province, offered to bridge the gap, de- ' spite the fact that this club has to put on a meeting of its own next Tuesday evening.. I Last night two open races and ono i for boys under 16 formed the pro- [ gramme. Fair fields and good finishes | were the order all round. The most | noteworthy incidents were the rattling 'finish of J. C. Dobbs in the 100 yds, ! which he won, and the defeat of C. H. | Taylor in the mile. Taylor was cerI tainly giving good starts, but they were not generally considered beyond him. Eesults were:— 100 yds Handicap—First heat: C. M. Walden (4yds) 1, A. Thompson (9yds> 2. J. C. Dobbs (7yds) 3. Time, lOJsec. Second heat: J. M. P. Corrick (7yds) 1, A. Bradley (10yds) 2. W. J. Batstonc (10yds) 3. Time, lOJsec. Final: Dobbs 1, Walden 2, Bradley 3. Time, lOjtscc. From a good start, the limit men held their advantage until about iiO yards, where Walden was coming up well. Thirty yards from home, Dobbs looked out ot it, but he came away with a great burst to win by a yard. He Is without doubt the most improved sprinter in Chrlstchurch since the season opened. A slight wind against the runners probably accounted for the slow times. One Mile Handicap—P.. O. Page (70yds) 1, E. J. Corcoran (130 yds) 2, C. H. Taylor (30yds) 3. Time, 4mjn 3Gsee. ,T. R. Lang, the Boys' High School runner, who was off fit) yards, and Page kept well together for the earlier part of the race, but the 'Varsity runner lasted the better of the two. Corcoran was blown after one lap, but stuck to it gamely. Taylor, who gained little on Page until the last 200 yards, finished fast, but he had left it too late, and could get within only 15 yards of Corcoran, whom Page bended by another 10 yards. 410 yds Boys' Race—D. Galvin and R. O'Loughlin (dead heat) 1, E. McC. Rule 3. Time, GOgsec. Rule ran from scratch and was giving the winners approximately 70 or 80 yards. He finished about a second behind them. The following is the programme for the C.A.A.C.'s meeting next Tuesday evening:—looyds handicap, 440 yds handicap, three miles handicap, and 880 yds handicap for boys under 16. Entries for the open event's close at the Pioneer Sports Club's rooms to-night. DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS. ALLOTTED TO AUCKLAND. Press Association. WELLINGTON, December 7. The Council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association met to-day. The Canterbury Centre asked that the championship meeting should bo held in

Christchurch, and tho Auckland Centre that it should be held at Auckland. When the matter wcut to a vote, four votes were cast for Auckland and four for Christchurch. The chairman's casting vote turned the scale in favour of the northern city. [Each centre Is represented on the council of the N.Z.A.A.A. by two delegates. Otago and Canterbury voted for the championships being held in Christchurch, and Wellington and Auckland for their being held in Auckland. The Southland Centre has only lately lost its representation on the council, through becoming defunct. One of its representatives on the council was Mr A. A. Marryatt, of Wellington, who, until a week ago, was president of the N.Z.A.A.A. The new president, who gave his casting vote for Auckland, Is Mr A. T. Da vies, of Wellington, and he is one of Auckland's representatives on the council. The council's decision will cause much dissatisfaction, for it will be the third championship meeting in succession to go to the North Island, Wellington having had the last two.]
