DISHONOURED CHEQUES.

AMOUNTING TO £1845/18/6. MASTERTON MAN CHARGED WITH FRAUD. Seventy-eight dishonoured cheques, I representing sums amounting to £1845 JlB/6, presented over a short period of | time is rather a large order. This (record is alleged to belong to H. J. O'Dwyer, who was charged at the (Magistrate's Court this morning with Shaving obtained £9 15/-, on a yaluoless j cheque, from John O'Grady, and with I having similarly obtained £ls from I James C. Wallace. I Messrs F. H. Christian and W. IT. I Seed, J.P.'s, were on the bench. Mr R. A. Cuthbert appeared for the accused. •Senior-Detective A. Cameron appeared jfor the police. The complainant O'Grady, licensee of I the Yaldhurst Hotel, stated that the I accused called at "the hotel on August .11. Accused's wife was with him and they had tea at the hotel. After having had tea, accused stated that he had no money and that he had been sent by a constable to see witness. Accused stated that he had a business in Masterton, and asked witness to cash a cheque for £lO. Witness did so, deducting 5/- for the tea. The cheque was presented at the bank next day and was dishonoured. 11. A. Dyer, accountant at the Bank of Australasia, Masterton, stated that the accused had had an account at the bank. In July his credit balance had been £7 16/5." This was now reduced to 6/5. Numerous cheques, signed by the accused, had been dishonoured. There had been some 53 of them, representing £ISOO. The accused had been in Masterton in business, but had sold out. Detective J. O'Connor said that the accused had admitted drawing the cheque, but stated that he had not done so with any fraudulent intent. He thought that there was a sufficient credit balance on his account to meet the cheque. / James C. Wallace, licensee of the Racecourse Hotel, Upper Riecarton, recognised the accused as a man who had visited his hotel on November 6. He had previously known the accused for about a fortnight. Accused asked witness to cash a cheque for £2O. This witness consented to do, but as he had only £l6, he gave the accused £ls, the latter agroeing to call back for the remaining £5. Tho cheque witness placed to his credit. It was dishonoured. Robert Geo. Lyon, ledger-keeper in the Bank of New Zealand, Palmerston North, said that he recognised accused, who had oponed an account at Palmerston North on September 17, depositing £7 12/3. There had been some 25 cheques dishonoured, of a total amount' of £345 18/6. There was £2 12/3 still standing to the credit of accused in tho bank. All the dishonoured cheques had exceeded this amount, hence the credit still remaining. The accused pleaded not guilty and! reserved his defenco on both charges.! He was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. I
