JUNIOR BAND COMPETITION^. From Our Own Correspondent. Nine junior members of the Bth (South Canterbury) Regimental Band who have for some months been putting in good, steady practise under Mr H. J. Chapman, faced an audience at the Theatre Royal on Saturday evening to ueclde the winners of gold and silver medals which had been allotted to tl.al section of the band. Taken all round, the playing was of a very high standard. The players were greatly assisted by the atcompaniste, Mrs H. J. Chapman. The judges were: Mr H. Osborne (Timaru) and Lieut. D. H. Osborne and J. Annaud (of Ashhurton). The awards were:— C. Miller (E-ilat bass), "Simon the Cellarer," 424 points 1; F. Teal (B-flat cocjjat), "Good-night, Farewell," 42 points, 2. The judges decided to award a third prize silver meual) to A. Byrom in the B-ilat section. NEWS AND NOTES. . The combined committee of the A. and P. Association and the Farmers' Union set up to arrange a welcome to Sir Thomas Mackenzie on his visit to Ashburton has asked Sir Thomas to arrange his stay for December 17. There will be a banquet in the evening. & At the annual meeting of the Mayfield Literary and Musical Society the balancesheet showed a credit of £lO 2/10. It was decided to hold the annual competitions in April, the date to be fixed later. The Rev. J. Johnstsn was unanimously re-elected chairman, and Messrs E. Withell and R. Oakley secretary and treasurer respectively. Fishing at the Rangitata mouth during the week-end, Mr H. Arnst secured eight fine trout, ranging from 51b to 61b. Mr C. Tovey also got a good basket. Anglers at Die Ashburton mouin were not nearly so fortunate, the best bag being five small trout landed by Mr H. Humphreys.
