RETIREMENT OF TEACHERS.

Press Asaorialion. ' BUNEDIN, August 19. A memorandum from the Education Department to-day urged the Education Board to use its discretion in dispensing with the services of teachers whose capacity is unimpaired at retiring age. The board held that in the interests of promotion, and therefore of contentment in the service, it should adhere to the present practice of retiring teachers automatically mt. the ages fixed. The hoard's point was that, if the Department offered adequate inducement, the services of such retired teachers could be retained in a temporary capacity. The present position is that in such cases salary and pension together must not exceed the salary at retirement.
