TE WAIPOUNAMU COLLEGE.
The Very Rev. Dean Carringtou presided over the annual meeting of Te Waipounamu Association in connection with the Maori Girls' College, Ohoka, which was held in St. Michael's Hull yesterday. The Bishop of Dnnedin was among those present. Besides the formal business of the meeting, a social interlude took place, during which a number of Maori girls from the collego gave songs in Maori and in English, and also a pretty exhibition of native dancing. The Rev. C. A. Fraer, principal of the college, moved the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, giving details 'of the year's work, and in doing so stressed the need for fuu,ds. The Rev. .1. de B. Galwey stated that it was desired to raise £IOOO for the purpose of transferring the College to Christchurch. It was much out of the way at Ohoka, and the building as it stood was not at all adequate. An opportunity had occurred to secure a more .suitable property in Christchurch, and he appealed for assistance towards that end. There w-ere 23 pupils at the, college, the number being evenly divided between the Christchurch and Dunedin dioceses.
The Bishop of Dunedin stated that he would endeavour to secure the in terest and support of the people of Dunedin towards the work of the college, which he would commend to the clergy and laity of his diocese. Ho believed that a number would bo willing to make regular subscriptions towards the maintenance of the college, but thought that it would be necessary to raise the £IOOO required for its establishment in Christchurcli. lie paid a high tribute to the work of the college, as shown by the bearing and manners of the girls present that afternoon. The Very Rev. Dean Carrington also spoke on the duty owed to the Maori race, and the need for supporting ami enlarging the work of the college.
