AMBULANCE WEEK.
PUBLIC APPEAL TO BE MADE. At, a meeting of a sub-committee of the St. John Ambulance Association there were present:—Captain W. W. Mc Kinney (chairman), Lady Rhodes, Mesdames A. 10. 0. Rhodes, Whittaker, IWatkins, Walters, Miss Carney, Sir R. JHeaton Rhodes, Messrs A. K. G. Rhodes, ill. L. Bowker, jun., T. S. Ronaldson and J. A. Flesher. ' The chairman stated that the object ]of the meeting was to make arrangements in connection with the annual appeal for funds to assist in carrying on I the work of the St. John Ambulance Association and Brigade in this district. I Mr Ronaldson said that the expenditure averaged £IOOO yearly. Class fees, l invalid transport fees and sundry items | of income brought in, on an average, from £,' 100 to £4OO annually, so that it I was necessary to appeal-for a sum of I £ooo at least. Class fees were kept moderately low in order to encourage people to' attend lectures. The fee charged for the use of an ambulance just about met, running expenses, but it covered neither the expenses of the transport of necessitous cases nor any j portion of the cost, of repairs and renewals. Another necessary expense was the maintenance of first aid depots in populated places where accidents were likely to happen. Mr A. E. G. Rhodes said it seemed to him that, if the association went to the public, it should be on the understanding that invalid transport work was continued. Various methods of making an appeal were then discussed. Mr 11. L. Bowker suggested that a canvass be made, and thought that the proposed building scheme sould be put in hand and made one of the objects of the appeal. | Mr A. E. G. Rhodes thought that the .building scheme should stand over until it was seen what the New Zealand branch of the British Red Cross Society and the Order of St. John was going to do, because it might become necessary to build to accommodate the joint society. The representatives of the brigade nursing divisions present offered to stock and manage two stalls, and their offer was accepted. It was resolved that there be two other stalls, namely, a produce stall and a flower stall. It was decided that a letter of appeal be prepared and that this be followed up by canvassers, working in pairs. Messrs J. A. Flesher and C. J. Ronaldson agreed to confer with a view to selecting canvassers, who would be added to the committee. It was agreed that the appeal be known as "Ambulance Week," and that •it close on Wednesday, March 10, when a sale of badges would take place, The proposal is subject to the City Council's approval of the erection of stalls.
