THE SOCIAL ROUND.

Mrs a S. T. Holmes and Miss Holmes (Rakaia) are in town. Mr and Mrs Edward Grigg (Eiffelton) are amongst the guests at Warner's. Major and Mrs Acton-Adams arrived from the north by this morning's boat. Mis F. K. Hunt and Miss Mollie Hunt left for Auckland by last evening's boat. Miss Cis Edwards, of New Brighton, returned home to-day, after spending a few davs in Dunedin.

On Wednesday afternoon next a "Mother Goose Fair" will be opened by Mrs A. Boyle at St. James's, Lower Ricearton. Mr and Mrs Walter Moore, "Chippenham." Brown's Road, entertained a number of friends at a small dance last night. The- Avonside Nursing Division of the St. John Ambulance held its weekly meeting at the brigade rooms on Thursday evening, Mrs Watkins (lady superintendent) in charge. A practical demonstration of washing a patient in bed was given by one of the officers. Miss Grace Taylor, Sydenham, and Miss Laura Marshall, Linwood, on the occasion of their approaching marriages, were presented with an afternoon tea service and a silver teapot respectively by their associate employees of the Kaiapoi Co.'s clothing factory. Mr Bissett, manager, made the presentation on behalf of the staffs.

An enjoyable dance was given by the Darfield Cricket Club last evening, at which there was a large attendance of local residents, and also those from other centres, including representatives from the Sheffield and Kirwee Cricket Clubs. The hall was a bright place with its decorations of flags, buuting, palms and pot plants, basket of flowers being suspended from the ceiling with pretty effect. The stage was carpeted and furnished as a drawing room, and Miss Macdonald 's orchestra supplied the brightest of dance music. A tempting supper was served during the evening. The committee who made the arrangements for the dance included Messrs C. Punnett, J. Redmond, S. Higgins, G. and G. C. Reberlv, H. and A. Otten, W. Summerville, S.* 11. Trickett, T. Warren, T. and L. Westwood. Messrs G. C. Reberly and n. Otten had charge of the floor as masters of ceremonies.
