PERSONALS.

The Rev. W. P. nughes, late of Malvern, has taken over the Sydenham Anglican charge, and will be inducted to-morrow. Messrs R. J. Upson (Port Chalmers) and J. Laurenson (Wellington) have been appointed inspectors of ships' gear, under the Waterside Workers' Regulations. Mr Geo. A. Dawson, the local manager of the Guardian Assurance Co., has been appointed Christchurch manager of the Insurance Office of Australia, Ltd. (the 1.0.A.) Mr A. McGavock, who has been secretary of the Otago Land Board ' for the past year, has been promoted to the position of Supervisor of the Lands Department in Christchurch. Mr L. B. Campbell, A.M.1.C.E., of the Public Works Department, has been appointed District Engineer at Stratford. Mr Campbell served in the War as a captain, and was awarded the M.C. Passengers from the north by this morning's ferrv steamer included the Hon. J. Barr," M.L.C., Major W. C. Finnis. N.Z.S.C. Rev. B. S. Gray and Mr H. D. Vavasour'

The death is reported, at Milford Sound, of Mr Donald Sutherland, who is well known to tourists. No particulars are to hand, l»ut it is understood that he and Mrs Sutherland had been living alone at Milford. Deceased, who was about 85 years of age, was the discoverer of the Sutherland Falls.

Colonel R. Young, C.8., C.M.G., D.5.0., Officer Commanding the Canterbury Military District, intends leaving Christchurch on Tuesday for the West Coast, where he will present the medals ■won by soldiers of that district. Colonel Young will be accompanied bv Lieut.-Colonel F. Svnion, C.M.G., D.5.0.. E.X.Z.A.

Surgeon-General D. J. McGavin, D.5.0., N.Z.M.C., Director of New Zealand Medical Services, arrived in-Christ-church from the north this morning. He proceeded, on arrival, to the Cashmere Military Sanatorium, on a tour of inspection. This afternoon General McGavin will visit the Queen Mary Hospital, Hanmcr, returning to Christchurch to-morrow.

At the Workers' Educational Association room in the Trades Hall last evening, Mr E. J. Howard gave an interesting address on several matters relating to the progress of Christchurch and the province of Canterbury. Although the proceedings were non-political, the speaker criticised the methods -of the Public Works Department, especially concerning railways. Town-planning and development were dealt with rather fully, over Hit) lantern slides being employed to show what was accomplished in other countries. Criticism was levelled at municipal management and organisation, and the speaker averred that, as in the case of Government undertakings, there was a tendency to work without a plan.
