TEACHERS' SALARIES.

DETAILS OF INCREASES. [Special to The. San.] WELLINGTON, November 7.' The effect of the new regulations affecting increases to teachers' salaries was explained in a statement made by • the Prime Minister to day. The scales of salaries previously in force have not been altered, but provision is made whereby each certificated teacher will receive an increase based on his position in the Dumifiion Grading List. It will be convenient to mark the salary groups bv numbers —let the groups £l3O to £l6O be 1; £l6O to £2OO be 2; £220 to £27 li 1«? 3; £270 to £:::S0 be 4; £330 to £3BO be 5; and £3SO to £450 be 6. Always the first figure in the group is a minimum, and the last figure a maximum. An-increase of £45 will be given in No. 3 Group, if the grading is above 47; in No. 4 Group, if the grading is above 36; in the No. 5 Group if the grading is above 22; and in the No. 0 Group if the grading is above 12 (above, in every case, meaning of a lower number, as, e.g., above 47 means numbers 46, 45, 44, etc.). This increase of £4O is given in No. 1 Group, if the grading is above 81; in •No. 2 (Jroup if it is above 76; in No. 3 Group if the grading is from 47 to 59; in the No. 4 Group if it is from 36 to 50; in the No. 5 Group if it is from 22 to 31; in the No. 6 Group if it is from 12 to 21. An increase of £35 is given in the No. 1 Group if the grading is 81 to 95; in the No. 3 Group if the grading is 60 to 75; in the No. 4 Group if the grading is 51 to 60. The increase is to be £3O in the No. 2 Group if the grading is 76 to 84; in the No. 5 Group if the grading is 32 to 41; and in the No.-6 Group if the grading is 21 to 26. The increase is to be £25 in the No. 1 Group if the grading is 96 to 104; in the No. 3 Group if the grading is 76 to 84: in the No. 4 Group if the grading i» 61 to 71. The increase is to be £2O in the No. 2 Group if the grading is 85 to 94; in the No. 5 Group if the grading is 42 to 51; and in the No. 6 Group if the grading is 27 to 37.

The increase is to be £ls in the Xo. 3 Group if the grading is under 84, ami in the No. 4 Group if the grading is under 71. The increase will be £lO in the No. 1 Gro>.;- if the grading is under 104; in the Xo. 2 Gr6up if the grading is under 94; in the Xo. 4 Group if the grading i» under 51; in the Xo. 6 Group if the grading is under 37. Uncertificated anil licensed teachers will receive the former scale of salaries, without the deductions previously imposed for the absence of a certificate. together with an addition of £lO in the case of licensed teachers. Other increases are provided in particular instances, the main one being the payment of an additional £lO per annum to all teachers in schools of Grades 1 to .18. Pupil teachers will be paid as follows:—Third Grade, £65 per annum; Second Grade, £75; First Grade. £BS. Probationers will be paid £65 per annum for the first year, and £75 for the second year. Training college students- will receive an annual increase of £2O. Pupil teachers, probationers, and training college students will receive, in addition to the above rates, £25 per annum if they are obliged to live away from home. The increases, whirh amount in the aggregate to £200,000 per year, are to date from April 1, 1919. Arrears will be paid as soon as possible, but, as a large amount of clerical work is involved, payment will probably not be made until the first week in IXvember. An important provision is one relating to relieving teachers, who will be paid fixed salaries when employed in future, and will receive other benefits to which they were not previously entitled. A more liberal scale of sick pay is to be provided. Organising teachers will be paid £SO house allowance. Those increases, together with the increases reeeivedon January 1 of this year, amount, in the majority of cases, to from £4O to £6O, and in manv cases to from £65 to £BO. Provision is made also for the slightly increased staffing of the larger schools, and for the appointment of a larger number of probationers. The Regulations will be gazetted in •bout 10 days or a fortnight.
