KILLED BY SHUNTTNCr ENGINE. Prett Association. WELLINGTON, May. 2. Donald Bennie, an able seaman on the -steamer Tainui, was injured by a shunting engine on the railway wharf last night, and died two hours later. The driver saw.something lying on the traelc, but was unable to stop in time, The man; was terribly injured. At the inquest no : evidence was forthcoming to show how deceasedccame to be lying on the railway line. There were no sign? of liquor' on niin.' He was conscious after the accident, and was able to. give his' name to the engine-driver. The coroner, who said it was mysterious that a man .who was both sober and conscious should be lying across the railwayline, returned an open verdict, adding that no blame was j attachable .to the. engine-driver. DEATH DNDEE ANffISTHETIC. DUNEDIN, May 2. The inquest- on the body of Annie Todner, who died under an anaesthetic, at' the hospital' last week, was concluded to-day. Dr Drennan's evidence was to. the effect that deceased died suddenly from heart failure, due to inflammatory condition over the left lung and Over the heart, and that death might have occurred suddenly, apart from any anaesthetic or "operative interference. In view of deceased's condition, an operation was the only possible resort. A verdict in accordance with the medical evidence wa3 returned.

While attempting to stop a- runaway horse and express outside his shop, Mr W. Fleming, a Perry Road storekeeper, was dragged along the road. -A wheel .of the cart went over his foot and he was treated as an'outpatient of the hospital and discharged. Miss Irene Neville, of 57 Salisbury Street, was- thrown heavily to the ground is the result of colliding- with another cyclist when attempting to avoid a man who was crossing the street She was conveyed to the Christchureh Hospital and is reported to be progressing favourably. ........
